VPS is an abbreviation for “virtual private server”. A VPS works by dividing a physical server into separate virtual machines. Each of these virtual machines, or virtual private servers, operate completely independently from one another. In other words, each VPS has its own operating system as well as allocation of resources like RAM, CPU and disk space. This provides you with an environment that closely mimics that of a Dedicated Server, without the costs associated with it.
The difference between shared and VPS hosting comes down to three things: resources, price, and performance.
Resources — Plain and simple, shared hosting is sharing a server with other websites, where VPS hosting provides server resources dedicated to you.
Pricing — Shared hosting is generally cheaper because resources are shared with more users. Virtual Servers on the other hand, generally have fewer websites, but are more expensive.
Performance — The reason most people choose VPS over shared is because of performance. Their website or application has heavy resource demands, or they have a higher expectation of performance. VPS powered websites, when managed correctly (like we do here at AHGEZ), are much faster and more responsive.
If you are looking for an easy upgrade from your Shared Hosting account and want to continue using an intuitive control panel like cPanel, we recommend that you select a Managed VPS account. Our expert support team can even seamlessly migrate your existing website into a Managed VPS for free!
If, on the other hand, you are an experienced developer who is comfortable working with command line and want root access so you can fully customize your server, an Unmanaged VPS would be a better option for you.
There is no limit to the number of websites you can host on a VPS, as our server has limitless hosting abilities. You are only limited by the amount of resources you have available on managed VPS hosting. The beauty of having a virtual environment that can increase/decrease as needed is that you can upgrade or downgrade your VPS at any time based on your needs.
As a general rule, setting up a virtual private server is done within minutes — 60 seconds being our target. For larger projects, however, where an OS uses a lot of memory, for instance – the installation phase may take slightly longer.
Unfortunately, the VPS hosting platform does not allow installation of custom operating systems. If the noted operating systems are not the right fit for you, you may want to consider a dedicated server. Our dedicated servers allow for the installation of multiple custom operating systems. Additionally, they provide the ability to fully-customize your hosting environment!
No, we do not have Windows VPS hosting options. Our Managed VPS solution uses Linux – Centos.
